First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Saludos, Kordas 19:11, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image:HavA0000.jpg[edit]

I removed the speedy delete copyright violation notice you put on Image:HavA0000.jpg; from previous discussions we have been allowing photos of 3 dimensional floats in public parades, so I dispute that it is an obvious speedy deleletion candidate. If you think this should be deleted as a copyright problem, please list it at Commons:Deletion requests for discussion. Thanks. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 19:24, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Domingo Cavallo.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Fan art[edit]

Hi, thanks for your contributions to the Fan art article. I have reverted your addition of the image, and thought I should explain why. While your example is right, and it is a good one, it demonstrates a general point about copyright not protecting an idea. As the article is specifically about fan art, I think the imges used ought to be fan art examples themselves. The image you used is a religious symbol and wasn't produced itself for the purpose of fan art. Maybe there is another example we could use there? --MichaelMaggs (talk) 22:29, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just to be clear, the the prefix requirement is a requirement of the dupes tool, not of the tagging proces (and the template handles both). As such, this is not his fault. TheDJ (talk) 23:25, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Mendoza_province_COA.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Mendoza_province_COA.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Reemplazo universal[edit]

y File:COA Buenos Aires province.jpg por File:Coat of arms of the Buenos Aires Province.png.

Escudos[edit]

Y también solicito un reemplazo universal de Image:Flag of San Juan province in Argentina.gif a Image:Flag of San Juan.svg. Gracias. --RoyFocker 12 (talk) 00:38, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Reemplazo universal II[edit]

Hola Belgrano!

File:Argentina (orthographic projection).svg.

Gracia otra vez por tu ayuda! Un saludo, Dexxter (talk) 08:24, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dexxter (talk) 04:00, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright versus copying[edit]

Hello Belgrano. I am cleaning up after MRDU08 (talk · contribs) and MRDU09 (talk · contribs), who have been indefinitely blocked on both Commons and en.wiki for copyright violations. Many of this user's uploads are clear violations (e.g. photos of beauty pageant contestants) but the user has also frequently uploaded images that were copied and pasted from various websites, notably "Flags of the World" (FOTW). Now, some of those FOTW images (e.g. File:Bandera del Distrito Capital de Paraguay.JPG) are clearly copyrightable from the source, but some others (e.g. File:Bandera de Junín.PNG) are simple geometric figures and therefore ineligible for copyright. However, the user still is guilty of copying JPEG files from that website and uploading them to Commons. Is that allowed per Commons policy, if the image is copyright-ineligible? Thanks, Andrwsc (talk) 17:42, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the explanation. For the really simple flag images, therefore, we should correct the license information. But I will still err on the side caution with respect to flags that are more complex, as the judgement of whether or not it is copyrightable isn't a decision that I want to make as a non-lawyer. I will stop tagging the obviously simple flags, but keep tagging the more complex ones just to get a second set of eyes. Thanks again, Andrwsc (talk) 20:56, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File renaming[edit]

Belgrano,

I tried to list File:U+500B.svg and File:U+4E2A.svg for renaming, but I can't tell if the request for renames page is still active. If you have a moment, would you be able to perform the moves? Thanks, Rjanag (talk) 20:26, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. From looking at Commons:MediaMoveBot, it looks like the bot for doing this might actually not be functional yet. Did you try the "click here to move" link in the {rename} template? I can't click it, but since you're an admin you might be able to... Rjanag (talk) 21:57, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see. No worries; I just got antsy and re-uploaded the files under the different names, since I don't know how long I would have to wait for the bot to take care of things. If you want, you are free to delete the old ones, or if you need to keep anything from the history (for example, the fact that they were originally uploaded by a different user) you can do whatever you need to do. question on copyvio issue raising[edit]

You removed my copyvio notice on an image by this edit. Your edit comment suggested i was trying to do something speedily, and perhaps that i was polemic or something. I'm not familiar with deletion processes in Commons, but in wikipedia a copyvio type of notice is not speedy at all, it calls for full deliberation. How may i raise the copyvio issue here in commons, specifically? Or, could you just demonstrate by opening it? The copyright issue for this particular image has been discussed in wikipedia over several weeks, at wikipedia talk of the uploader and elsewhere. I just want to get the wheels in motion here. The photo is not ok, because it contains a non free photography. The programm itselfe is free, but the photo in the programm is not. Yours --Jodo (talk) 20:53, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Hello, You have deleted the photo of Cadbury chocolate bars after request from user:Dodo. Since you are administrator, I would like to ask why do pictures like File:Snickers.jpeg, File:Danusia.JPG, File:Boldo.jpg and File:KitKat chunky.jpg pass Commons' rules for derivate works whereas the photo which I mentioned doesn't.

Saludos, Quijav (talk) 13:18, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

i don't see evidence of "excessive vandalism" in this case?

also; the template is broken; on this user's talkpage:

the section edit takes you to the template's edit page not the usertalkpage section

File:Formosa_COA.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

User:Archi Spotter ‎[edit]

I'm just trying to get your take on the Archi Spotter ‎situation. You deleted the 40+ uploads from flickr, even though they were licensed CC-BY and blocked Archi Spotter. Additionally, we have received 43 e-mails from this user (one for each image presumably) via OTRS. It seems odd to delete CC-BY images, and block a user for uploading said free images. I understand that there was also a copyright notice attached to the images, © CivicArts / Eric R. Kuhne & Associates, http://www.civicarts.com. I guess it is a matter of does CC-BY trump that (and from the looks of the OTRS permission, the copyright owner intended to release these images under the free license). So yeah... just wanted to get your side of things. Looks like the 40+ images should be undeleted, if not based on passing flickr review, but also from OTRS permission. -Andrew c (talk) 00:30, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bandera de Buenos Aires ‎[edit]

Hola Belgrano, yo otra vez, y solicitandote otro reemplazo universal.

¿Me podrías ayudar? Muchas gracias. --Erfil (talk) 12:10, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Muchísimas gracias por encargarte del caso. Un saludo --Erfil (talk) 16:13, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I don't think that kind of deletion helps. You have deleted as copyvio, but the uploader has provided the source link himself, saying that he was the author of the file (to be precised). What was needed was a proper permission for the file (which the user might have been able to provide), not a brutal deletion. To me, it doesn't look like an "obvious copyright violation" (unless you assume the user is lying) and did not warrant a speedy deletion. Regards, --Eusebius (talk) 13:32, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Belgrano, you deleted an image I was in the process of tagging for copyright violation, which led me to recreate the deleted file. Could you please delete the page? Talk about edit conflicts. blurpeace (talk) 03:22, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

While I was in edit mode you had deleted the file. I didn't get an edit conflict warning, but I guess that doesn't apply to deletions? Odd. –blurpeace (talk) 09:39, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Cambalachero!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Consulta[edit]

Hola Belgrano.

Saludos y gracias, Quijav (talk) 13:00, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your assistance please...[edit]

The record shows you deleted File:Ahmed Al Darbi.jpg. But it doesn't say where the deletion of this file was discussed. I'd like to read that discussion, and would appreciated you informing me of where to find that discussion.

Thanks! Geo Swan (talk) 20:34, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I got your reply.
After I left this note I checked WhatLinksHere/File:Ahmed Al Darbi.jpg. It seems the only discussion of this image is my question, here.
I checked your dicdef. No offense, but I do not regard your interpretation as clear cut. When I posed my question on the village pump I thought that those with an opinion would weigh in there. I didn't expect an undiscussed deletion. And I didn't expect to learn of that deletion through the wikipedia's commons delinker bot.
So, from your dicdef, what do you think "released" meant, if it didn't mean "released into the public domain"?
Public domain#Copyright says:
It is commonly believed by non-lawyers that it is impossible to put a work into the public domain. Although copyright law generally does not provide any statutory means to "abandon" copyright so that a work can enter the public domain, this does not mean that it is impossible or even difficult, only that the law is somewhat unclear.
Consider Omar Khadr. At first the there were only two photos of him. They were widely republished, but with no credits. When they were printed with credits, those credits were contradictory, and frankly not credible. One as a young child, and another from when he was a young teenager. It took us ages to trace down where the images came from. It turned out that his family had handed them out to reporters at a hearing, or reasonable equivalent. They had handed them out without condition. This is one reason why, when they were published, they were generally treated as if they were in the public domain. Handing the photos out to strangers, without condition, was treated as the equivalent of declaring that the images were being put into the public domain.
IANAL, but aren't those publications correct that routinely used the images without credit, as if the distribution of images, to strangers, without conditions, amounted to placing them in the public domain?
We eventually were able to contact members of his family. His sister was confused that there was any controversy over whether we were free to use the images. She thought that by the family's manner of distributing the photos had already disclaimed all rights to the photos. Geo Swan (talk) 21:59, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Peron y Lollobrigida.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.
