Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Code issues in User:B222/common.js[edit]

Hi B222, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

  1. You edited User:B222/common.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
  2. Though, that change appears to introduce 1 new jshint issue — the page's status is now having warnings. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
  3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. Ik heb wat al te emotioneel gereageerd op gedrag wat ik ervaar als schadelijk voor de encyclopedie, vanuit de angst dat de schade zich bij een moderatorschap uit zou breiden.
Dat spijt me. Vanuit die angst heb ik zelf schade veroorzaakt en ik ben al een tijdje aan het overwegen wat ik kan doen om de schade te herstellen. Deze ietwat afgelegen plaats is misschien geschikt om te zien wat er gedaan kan worden → bertux 18:34, 30 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Misinformation[edit]

Hallo Bertux, ik kwam je afbeelding File:Barge with protest texts in Wilhelminakanaal the Netherlands IMG 20211102 133717.jpg tegen. Deze heb je o.a. de categorie 'Misinformation related to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Netherlands' meegegeven. Ik vond het wel interessant om te zien. Teksten als "TEST/VACCINATIEPLICHT = OORLOGSVERKLARING!!!", "I DO NOT CONSENT!", "SOLIDAIR MET DE BOER!" en "VACCIN = GIF", dragen die eigenlijk wel enige informatieve pretentie in zich? De middelste twee gaan sowieso alleen over de boodschapper; de keuzes die hij maakt. De eerste zal, denk ik, door niemand (met eender welk standpunt in het coronadebat) serieus worden genomen als een signalering van een dreiging met gewapend geweld. Alleen de laatste komt ietwat in de buurt van het pretenderen de lezer juiste informatie te verschaffen, maar lijkt me nog altijd, net als de andere drie slogans, gewoon een uiting van een bepaalde emotie (en daarnaast een cliché). Al die vier kreten lijken me gewoon neer te komen op "Ik heb een standpunt en dat moet iedereen weten!". In zekere zin wel echte informatie dus ... Zoals je misschien in De kroeg (hier het archief) hebt gelezen, is de schipper ook actief in maritieme publicaties en daar blijkt wel degelijk dat hij serieus van mening is dat het vaccin giftig is. Los daarvan zijn er wat argumenten om het wel in die categorie te zetten:
  • Face value: interpretatie alleen als die onontkoombaar is.
  • Het protest neemt vele vormen aan en wie een plaatje zoekt kan dit een prettige verrassing vinden, ook al zit het wat in een uithoek van zijn categorie.
  • Een plaatje als dit is allicht geschikter als illustratie dan een pamflet op A4-formaat.
Nu sta ik wel te boek als iemand met een neiging tot overcategorisering, Voel je vrij om andere meningen te vragen. Een halszaak is het niet.
Terzijde: er zijn genoeg (te veel) mensen die bij een vaccinatieplicht bereid zijn om over te gaan tot geweld en ik hou het zeker voor mogelijk dat deze schipper zich daarbij zal aansluiten, al verwacht ik dat niet. Het lijkt me wel redelijk waarschijnlijk dat hij hand- en spandiensten zal willen verlenen aan gewelddadige groepen.

Ik ben het met je argumentatie niet eens (o.a. het gebruik van "Face value: interpretatie alleen als die onontkoombaar is": die onderschrijf ik in zichzelf wel, maar dan juist als niet pleitend voor opname van de genoemde categorie), maar wel met je opmerking dat het geen halszaak is. Ik wou onder meer even kijken wat je drijft (om dicht bij het water te blijven). Of de categorieën 'Dutch-language signage at demonstrations', 'English-language signage at demonstrations' en 'Bilingual banners' toepasselijk zijn kan trouwens ook nog kritisch worden bekeken (waar is op deze foto de demonstratie, een banner is toch een spandoek?). En de Kroeg, daar kom ik weinig, ook die ene discussie had ik zodoende niet gezien. Apdency (talk) 10:08, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Burgemeester[edit]

Hoi Bertux, ik kwam toevallig dit tegen. Toen nl:Hendrik Adriaan van Willigen (geboren 27 oktober 1906) in 1934 burgemeester werd, was nl:Guus de Casembroot (geboren 17 december 1906) al burgemeester van Westkapelle. Van Willigen was dus krap 2 maanden ouder dan De Casembroot en mogelijk was zelfs die in 1934 niet meer de jongste. Die ruim 43 jaar (geen 48 jaar) burgemeester van dezelfde gemeente van Van Willigen blijft natuurlijk opmerkelijk. En daarmee werd ook duidelijk aangetoond dat wat er over Lenferink geschreven hoogstens een momentopname was. Je aanpassing van het artikel over Lenferink waardeer ik. Zoals je hier kunt lezen zijn er trouwens ook Nederlandse burgemeester met 49, 56 en zelfs 60 jaar bij (effectief) dezelfde gemeente. Maar zelfs 60 jaar lijkt niet genoeg voor een eerste plek. J. van 't Hoff was ongeveer 65 jaar burgemeester van Heerjansdam (zie [1] en[2]). Maar ja, wie weet is er nog een daar overheen gegaan is. Als er trouwens twijfel is over iets wat ik in een artikel op nl-wiki geschreven heb, kun je me daarvoor ook hier op Commons om een toelichting vragen. - Robotje (talk) 02:25, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

hoi Bertus, om problemen te voorkomen is het goed als je bij de door jou gemaakte foto vermeld dat je akkoord bent met CCBYSA. Omdat immers Vera de foto heeft geupload. Formeel gedoe, maar je kent de mores hier wel denk ik. Was leuk je weer te zien! En de foto is heel goed. Hoop dat iemand nog een foto van jou gaat uploaden. Het Legioen

Ja, het was een geslaagde dag! De groepsfoto's bij de Amersfoorter stadspoort zal ik ook uploaden als ze scherp genoeg zijn.
Heel bijzonder en leerzaam vond ik ook de ontmoeting met de zwakbegaafde, openhartige Feyenoord-hooligan. Niet wat ik ingevuld zou hebben bij beschrijf hoe je eerste ontmoeting met een hooligan zal verlopen. Ik geloof dat ik hem zelfs wel kan begrijpen: overal is hij het sukkeltje, maar in het Legioen is hij een man. Hij redt daar de eer en slaat 020 op d'r muil! (Je weet, neem ik aan, dat Feyenoorders geen namen uitspreken die met een A beginnen.)
In Utrecht heb ik nog een tweede stadswandeling gemaakt, met de telefooncamera in de aanslag. De reportage heeft de werktitel de Utrecht-machine gekregen. Heel mooi hopelijk, maar niet erg opwekkend, zoals de naam al aangeeft. Dank je! Ja, wat zijn er bijzondere mensen op de wereld. Als je zo een figuur ontmoet als die alleen is, in een veilige trein samen met anderen, hoef je niet bang te zijn, hij gaf zelfs de stickers voor mijn man (010 fan). Nadat jij en Veertje de stickers hadden verwijderd kregen jullie goedkeurende blikken van de dames aan de andere kant van het gangpad. Dat heb je misschien niet gzien.
