Identity of painter[edit]

The biographical data supplied by the source cannot be verified ( The source gallery [1]is not replying to requests through their shop mail system). The signature is very similar to Wilhelm Karl Dohmanns' (WKD), whose birth date and place differ and his occupation as a portrait painter is documented in his marriage records. Discussion with a museum registrar suggests that it is highly improbable that two people with the same name who lived in roughly the same time period existed and both were painters with similar signatures. Genealogical research has uncovered a profile on Ancestry.com for a Wilhelm Dohmann and my assumption is that in lieu of other information, this was used by the gallery to flesh out their information. My assumptions are based on findings on the internet of one particular painting, that shows exactly the same scene as one that is in family possession. Including the same signature. But is being accredited to the other "plain" Wilhelm Dohmann. I would have preferred to actually create a page for "my" WKD, but as he wasn't a notable enough artist of his time, I'm trying to create a resource which eventually will establish the correct information. I have a family photo of WKD and one of the other WD, but as it is from ancestry I cannot upload it here for comparison ( to clarify that these two men are separate entities).

I would like to change the biographical data and source, as this only helps to perpetuate the wrong information.

I would love to add the relevant images to support my reasoning, but as I have only permission for the family painting, I will refrain from doing that at the moment. Any advice how to go about that would be much appreciated.

PS: not sure if this is how a talk page works, if not please advise and correct me. TIA Pisa911 (talk) 06:13, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Pisa911, yep, this is how a talk page works. I've added a topic heading above. I see you now have images of the documents at your website [2], which saves me from needing to register an account at Raduraksti to see https://www.raduraksti.arhivi.lv/objects/1:4:11:2055:2310:15635#&gid=1&pid=14

I'm having trouble deciphering most of the handwriting in the birth register, but I can make out the important bit “1876 ... Neuhof ... Wilhelm Karl Dohmann ... Karl Fred. Dohmann”.

PS: His father's middle name is "Ferdinand", for some reason one document has him as "Friedrich"! //roll eyes// Pisa911 (talk) 00:33, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure how best to word it, but I'll update the description.

Thank you Pelagic and much appreciated, let me know if you want to clarify some of the documents, happy to do that via email as well. I am still trying to establish his date and place of death, but having to wait for the council services in various German towns to do the research. I have already established more details regarding his whereabouts and contacted private people to establish if the 'plain' WD was a painter or not. PS: would any info in these documents be of use for his Creator page [3]? Pisa911 (talk) 23:46, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Feste[edit]

Given the context, does “Feste” in the title mean “Festung” / “fortress”? Pelagic (talk) 00:01, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

yes it does, kind of an old-fashioned/ southern word for it. Pisa911 (talk) 00:04, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
