Area

[edit]

How come the maps aren't aligned to the same scale by area? 2A01:119F:21D:7900:BDF1:4313:2641:7B37 12:16, 24 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I don't really understand your question. The black dotted lines denote the standard parallels, on which the horizontal (longitudinal) and vertical (latitudinal) scales are equal. The scale of each map changes as one moves away from the standard parallels. Hope that helps, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 00:31, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
user:cmglee, with individual files one could scale as wanted: a) as is done currently, equal length of equator b) as probably asked for by user 2A01, with equal area, i.e. equal number of pixels. area-equal set of equal-area projections. At least I thought about it when working on the comparison table in enwiki. Euro2023 (talk) 22:47, 8 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Individual files

[edit]

User:Cmglee, could you upload the projections as individual files? There is a comparison table, but it misses images for some projections: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cylindrical_equal-area_projection&oldid=1132388519#Specializations_of_the_normal_cylindrical_equal-area_projection Euro2023 (talk) 22:42, 8 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Euro2023: They are all the same image, just vertically stretched to the appropriate height. Unfortunately, the widthxheightpx thumbnail syntax preserves the aspect ratio, otherwise all the thumbnails can be generated from the same image. Could you find out if there's an undocumented feature to stretch thumbnails to fill a rectangle? cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 02:25, 9 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
User:Cmglee, no, couldn't find anything in MediaWiki docu that allows a change of aspect ratio. Euro2023 (talk) 14:53, 9 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

User:Cmglee, as master of SVGs, could you stretch vertically the File:Tissot indicatrix world map Lambert cyl equal-area proj.svg - it has the standard latitude at 0°, so it can be easily used for others - even if only stretched and not drawing the standard parallels it would be already useful. For Smyth the aspect ratio is 2, so preserving the 3000px width as the other files have, the height should be 1500px for Smyth. I can then put the image into the table at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Normal_cylindrical_equal-area_projection&oldid=1132784655#Specializations Euro2023 (talk) 16:59, 10 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Euro2023, I've found some time to address your request. I see Sting has uploaded Tissot versions of the projections. I'll upload Blue Marble ones later today. Cheers, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 10:46, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
