Please do not change size

[edit]

I reverted the recent uploading of a new version of image File:Solid white bordered.png because I noticed that wikimedia produced thumbnails that appeared different from the previous revision. An example is at this French Wikipedia Le Bistro page. Another example can be found where a user relied on the 200 pixels width of the original as a means to demonstrate right alignment. I suggest that it is preferable to upload changes of this nature (size or proportions) as a new file, as recommended by the proposed guideline Commons:Avoid overwriting existing files. -84user (talk) 19:25, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I did that in an attempt to harmonize this file with its vector version. I'm quite aware of the guideline you mention, but did not consider it applicable here. When used as a thumbnail on wikipedia, the size of an image does not matter, and I don't consider it good practice to rely on a particular size. Perhaps we need a guideline about that too; just think of the many photographs on commons that are replaced by original versions of (much) higher resolution. The "avoid overwrite" guideline doesn't mention anything about that, but it is common practice here on commons. On the other side, the "substantial crop" phrasing, although not literally applicable here, seems to support your point of view.
Uploading under a new file name wouldn't serve my purpose of harmonization with the SVG version, so now that I know that it caused trouble, I'll simply leave things as the are now.
Thanks for letting me know you reverted my edit. Kind regards, Jaho (talk) 13:52, 5 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
