Notes of Interest[edit]

  • Map rotation: 360 - 168 = 192 degrees, which orients as Antarctica is generally shown. This is meant to enable casual users to recognize the context. Maps of Ross are generally not oriented this way, with notable exception to continental-scope map databases with continuous coverage of Antarctica.
This is the one opportunity (presently) in the Ross article to orient to those databases. The utility of providing this orientation is not arbitrary -- it is useful.
The default orientation of the generation script is to the local meridian, i.e. South is straight down on such maps. For Polar regions, this is perhaps counter-intuitive in some respects.
  • This SVG is the prototype of my Grey-Green Orthographic projection series. It will (hopefully) see any improvements I've made to the scheme (as personally employed).
  • Choice of Meridian and Parallel scheme a bit arbitrary. The cluster of parallels near Pole was modeled on Alexrk2's and as such, appears to be a departure from the Grey-Green scheme, I think).
  • Translations from translate.google.com and are approximate; presented here as a prototype, bread-crumb trail, left for other editors (native speakers) to easily follow, when updating the Description of this file.

To Do[edit]

  • The Antarctic Circle is set to 67° due to the resolution of the authoring tool. It should be possible to interpolate a more accurate representation (the error is easily visible to the eye, as rendered).
  • The NED tiny countries file was omitted during SVG generation (perlshaper.pl was used for file generation).
  • Test for reasonable and appropriate inclusion or exclusion of tiny countries (and so forth) based primarily on:
  • technical concerns
  • ease of use
  • machine requirements for rendering and editing.
Although, this is somewhat mooted by the render-to-PNG function of the server (the PNG probably won't inflate much, if at all, by tiny countries inclusion).
  • Any such inclusions to be clearly marked and grouped in the SVG (to allow for easy removal by the end-user).
