Update needed

[edit]

@AnonMoos: Since it's being kept (and is used in articles), an update to this drawing is needed, after the last two investigations of the identities of the subjects of Joe Rosenthal's photograph. I think it would be best to follow the lead of the Marine Corps and use numbers rather than names to identify the six positions in this drawing.

From right to left, the subjects of Rosenthal's photograph are as follows:[1]

  • Position 1: Corporal Harlon H. Block
  • Position 2: Corporal Harold P. Keller (misidentified as Rene Gagnon until October 2019)
  • Position 3: Private First Class Franklin R. Sousley
  • Position 4: Sergeant Michael Strank
  • Position 5: Private First Class Harold H. Schultz (misidentified as John Bradley until June 2016)
  • Position 6: Private First Class Ira H. Hayes

Replacing names with numbers will make the graphic more readable, too. Thanks in advance to anyone taking on this project. — WFinch (talk) 16:03, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

An annotated photograph of the flag raisers, with their position and names, is on page 243 of the Investigating Iwo PDF cited below. — WFinch (talk) 16:16, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
