It might be an obvious play on words, but it should perhaps be spelled out for those less versed in the meanings of the word gay and gai. "gai" in French has primarily the meaning of joyfulness, that was displaced in the English word "gay" - the play on words here could equally be translated as "Rather a happy marriage than a sad one" 130.62.70.194 04:35, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
