Colour depth loss reverted[edit]

I reverted the recent uploading of a new version of image File:JosephineBakerBurlesque.JPG because I noticed that the colour depth changed from 24 to 8 bits. This is in my opinion too much picture information to lose. 8 bits only supports 256 different shades of gray. 24 bits, even as red, green and blue, supports a greater range. It is true that the original has slight reddish markings, these may have been due to the scanner used, or are in fact discolourations of the original silver print. Because my revrsion may be controversial I am noting it at the proposed guideline Commons talk:Avoid overwriting existing files#Examples. I would strongly support re-uploading the 8 bit grayscale image in a separate file as a valid alternative version. -84user (talk) 19:47, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
