Rename[edit]

The image is Glamis Castle, Angus - compare File:Glamis.jpg; The source caption is "Glammis Castle" but Canmore describes a former tower in Kinghorn, Fife as Glammis Castle [1]. Finavon (talk) 07:32, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No it should not be renamed. I debated this to myself when I uploaded the image. Canmore is a modern reference resource and sanitised version of Scottish history, looking at it in hindsight. In the book this image comes from The baronial and ecclesiastical antiquities of Scotland (1852) by Billings, it is named Glammis (Angus). Elsewhere for example, In The earth and its inhabitants (1881) by Élisée Reclus and edited by Ravenstein on page 366 you can see it spelt as Glammis, and I could go on and on. Glamis as a spelling was only fixed on, relatively recently in history. Please change it back. The modern mis-spelling here, acts as a signpost to the researcher to investigate alternative spellings. I'm all for correcting modern day spelling goofs (I only found one yesterday made by the Imperial War Museum in the 50s or later when they misspelt what the artist was telling them on his drawing), but not historically correct spellings. Now you have found the existence of another, different and largely unknown Glammis, I look forward to your entry about it's alternative spelling in the Kinghorn article (where it is spelt as Glamis). You could also write to Canmore and get them to list past variations of spellings for Scotland of which there are many. Still Billings beats Canmore everytime. Again, move the file back to its correct original spelling Glammis. Regards --Broichmore (talk) 09:39, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
