Colour[edit]

It's impossible that the yellow (of verion 22:30, 5. Feb 2006) is the correct shade. Just compare this image to a real flag and you'll see. No, no. This here is almost orange! • Madden 15:30, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And it's impossible to depict print-colours in RGB. So we should use the colours given in official web graphics like this one. • Madden 15:42, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The colours in web graphics even in the official websites are often defined by the web designer and they cannot be trusted as such. While the conversions from printing colours to RGB shades are never perfect, they are usually the best possible approximation for the 'ideal' tones since governments seldom define official RGB tones to be used in web graphics. As the officially defined CMYK tones are also meant mainly for printing, using them in web graphics will often result in oversaturated colours as monitors are self-illuminating and show colours brighter than in printed material. After checking a few photographs, I agree that the shades used here are too dark especially for the yellow. It may be that the source I used for the RAL conversions was incorrect as the Pantone conversions I made in Photoshop for the semi-official PMS codes [1] results in brighter tones. I'll use them instead—I hope the result will be closer to the truth. –Vzb83 16:09, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Much better, thanks! The Image:Flag of Germany (state).svg and Image:Naval Ensign of Germany.svg have to be changed then, too. • Madden 16:25, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've updated Image:Flag of Germany (2-3).svg with the new colors. User:dbenbenn 23:01, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Quote from Vzb83's weblink: "...colour shades had not been fixed by the Federal Minister of the Interior, since these always change in the course of the years..." Please note that the color definitions given there are about 8 years old. German wikipedia tells that today these values are recommended: red #FF0000, gold #FFD700. See [2] for details. After all, it remains a matter of taste. Personally, I think that #FF0000 is way too bright, and I don't like the currently used red tone #DC241F, since I don't see the point in adding blue and green components -- Pumbaa80 17:49, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The full and pure RGB red is too bright, I agree. But I like the current red shade. Which red shade do you suggest? • Madden 21:53, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
#DD0000 looks ok to me: it is about as bright as the currently used red tone, but looks more luscious, not so bleached. BTW: The gold tone is alright. --Pumbaa80 19:58, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Nice suggestion. I was free to change it. • Madden 16:27, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Usage symbol (FIAV)[edit]

I corrected the FIAV symbol, so that it includes the state ensign as well.--82.135.28.22 12:10, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted, after a short disuccion at a german wikipedia discussion page. External source: flags.net --M.L 18:35, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Turkish description misspelled[edit]

Hi.

The Turkish description of the German flag is totally wrong.

Correct is: Almanya bayrağı, not Almannhia (which looks like Spanish or something, but definitely not Turkish :)

Changes[edit]

{{editprotected}} Category:Black, red, yellow needs to be replaced with Category:Black, red, yellow flags. Additional categories would be Category:Horizontal tricolor flags and Category:Flags with an aspect ratio of 5:3. As a minor issue, you could also replace "Română: Steagul Germaniei" with "Română: Steagul [[:w:ro:Germania|Germaniei]]". Thank you. --Anime Addict AA (talk) 18:32, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No! Please don't unlock the file! There hasn't been any actual discussion! Antonsusi (talk) 09:54, 23 May 2020 (UTC) (User of the German WP)[reply]
@User456541 and Antonsusi: here are latest guidelines which I could find. There, the recommended flag colors for online use are: Black: #000000 Red: #FF0000 Gold: #FFCC00. Please note, that CMYK recommendation are explicitly for printing. Quote: Für den Druck verwenden Sie bitte die entsprechenden CMYK- und PANTONE® Werte. [...] Für den Einsatz in Online-Medien sowie in allen Office-Programmen stehen RGB-Farbwerte zur Verfügung. Google translate: Please use the appropriate CMYK and PANTONE® values for printing. [...] RGB color values are available for use in online media and in all office programs. —andrybak (talk) 22:16, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No other colors than the official RGB-Values #000000, #FF0000 and #FFCC00 are ok, but there is a problem: This file is used for the German flagicon. So there shoudt be no change. Antonsusi (talk) 23:15, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Antonsusi, could you please clarify, why the file being used as a flagicon means it shouldn't be changed? —andrybak (talk) 10:42, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There are about 200 000 inclusions (on 100 000 different pages) in de:WP and in en:WP nearly also. All WPs will have more than a million uses. The server will need 24 hours to update those pages. Antonsusi (talk) 11:58, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Please elaborate. I still don't understand what is the issue here. The colors in the file are not correct, no matter how much time it will take for caches to update. —andrybak (talk) 20:58, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This is not the only file that would require a change. According to the file page:

"If you intend to modify the colors, remember to change all of these, too:

(and probably several more)..."

While the server could certainly handle this workload, I'd like to point out that there is no urgent need to change the color. In vexilogy as in heraldry, there is no "correct" tone of a colour. As long as the colour stays true to the blazon, the hues and shades are left to the artist. Moreover, the German government has published a style guide with the official colours, but not a mandatory manual. De728631 (talk) 12:00, 14 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that there is no legal definition for the gold in the flag. The linked styleguide is just for the campaign of the current government and could become changed anytime. In HTML/sRGB definition the gold is #FFD700. --GPSLeo (talk) 12:32, 14 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Interconversion between additive and subtractive colour models is not at all straightforward, being subject to a great many variable assumptions about display devices, printing media, illumination conditions, and so on. Considering most of our applications are on-screen, I don’t think our principal flag images should be based on CMYK specs where there is disagreement with official RGB values; in general the CMYK colours would be much more appropriate for use in an alternative “for printing” version.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:32, 14 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Black part reaching into the yellow part[edit]

The current SVG reads:

<rect id="black_stripe" width="5" height="3" y="0" x="0" fill="#000"/>
<rect id="red_stripe"   width="5" height="2" y="1" x="0" fill="#D00"/>
<rect id="gold_stripe"  width="5" height="1" y="2" x="0" fill="#FFCE00"/>

What is the purpose of making the black bar 3 units high, as opposed to the yellow bar, which is only 1 unit high? This definition means that when the flag is rendered on a non-integer coordinate, the black color will leak into the left and right edge, creating a dark border in the red and yellow area.

Try it by changing the =height= of the image from 600 to 555.

Was it a deliberate decision to make the black larger than the red and the yellow, and if so, why?

--RolandIllig (talk) 15:40, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@RolandIllig: It is workaround for a known renderer bug that introduces a white hairline between the stripes despite there being no gap in some resolutions. The 2006 upload message "code to avoid white stripes after scaling" refers to that. This is probably the best solution that we as users/creators can employ as long as Wikimedia uses the same rendering software.--TFerenczy (talk) 16:40, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Code cleanup[edit]

{{Edit request}} I would suggest simplifying the code of the svg file, currently it is at 502 bytes but I think it can be made as small as 185 bytes with a source code like this:

<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="1000" height="600"><path fill="#FFCE00" d="M0 0h1000v600H0z"/><path fill="#D00" d="M0 0h1000v400H0z"/><path d="M0 0h1000v200H0z"/></svg>

Let me know if anyone agrees or believes the file should be kept the same, thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Colohisto (talk • contribs) 01:01, 30 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The code is more compact, but not “cleaner” in any way. As the resulting image is rendered as a PNG, there shouldn’t be any change at all. -- best regards, 32X (talk) 16:18, 20 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
