Sweden and Greece visible in the thumbnail version only[edit]

See above. Open the file: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/87/Flag-map_of_the_world.svg and try to find the Swedish flag. Or the Greek one. At least on my computer (Linux, Chromium browser) they're only visible in the thumbnail. 94.189.190.122 19:14, 10 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Same for me. I also can't see Argentina, Azerbaijan, Chile, Ireland, Philliphines, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, and I think more. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Markusw0207 (talk • contribs) 04:18, 11 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Greenland[edit]

  • I noticed that the national flag of Greenland is incorrect (it appears that the flag of Denmark was used instead.) I'm not skilled enough yet to fix this, but if someone else knows how, please upload a new one. -- 01:20, 16 December 2009 210.128.243.2
  • Yeah, they have alot todo with Denmark, (and nice to see the the Danish flag being so big ;)), but they have their own flag - and a pointed out in their page, they have both home- and selfrule :) So to be honost, they aren't a part of Denmark anymore, even though we have alot in common and still "work together" :) --Anigif (talk) 23:35, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If "Denmark maintains control of foreign affairs and defence matters", then it is part of Denmark... AnonMoos (talk) 06:18, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, that article has been significantly shaped by English Wikipedia user "Harlan wilkerson"'s personal innovative abstract philosophical metaphysical legal theories. According to the usual accepted criteria of nationhood, the Palestinian Authority lacks several crucial requisites of being a nation-state (as opposed to a separatist movement or government-in-exile), such as effective de facto exclusive control over its claimed territories. If even the United Nations (which ordinarily goes out of its way on almost every occasion to express a spiteful hatred bordering on pathological racism towards Israel) doesn't give full recognition to "Palestine", then why should it be done in this image? AnonMoos (talk) 12:28, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • The file uses the United Nation's official stance on places. As far as I know that would exclude Palestine, but if I am incorrect about this, somebody else will have to add it. My computer handles this file far too slowly with the new version of Inkscape, you see. Also, it is just me or is the Dominican Republic blank? Transparent 6lue (talk) 03:00, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I coulden't find the Israeli falg there, but the paletinian one instead. The formal state, accordind to the UN, is Israel and not Palestine!

Libya[edit]

The w:2011 Libyan Civil War is making people debate over the flag, maybe the land of Libya could use this flag. SomeDudeWithAUserName (talk) 03:29, 12 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In a graphic of this nature, it's really not feasible to update it every few days to take into account the latest situation as a result of the most recent fighting. I don't see much problem with waiting a little while until things sort themselves out in some definitively official way. AnonMoos (talk) 08:06, 12 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Alaska?[edit]

I have a question, if this map is going by U.N. member countries, then why does Alaska have its own flag if its a U.S. state? Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 11:05, 21 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Aleutian Islands[edit]

If anyone would like to have a go and fix the Aleutian Islands rendering issue (upper right corner), that would be greatly appreciated. I couldn't figure out the cause of the problem, nor could I fix it. It's good to see that the overall rendering issue has been fixed somehow. Transparent 6lue (talk) 19:44, 27 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect it might be due to a pattern definition, but my only method of troubleshooting SVG files is to open them in a text editor -- it works in many cases, but I'm not sure how practical it would be for a 6 meg file... AnonMoos (talk) 21:27, 27 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Taiwan[edit]

The flag of Taiwan is incorrect. Please fix. Although Taiwan didn't join the United Nations, was also a member nation of WHO and APEC, up to October, 2010, own an official member of 31 international organizations, the U.N. isn't the only judgment standard.

台灣的國旗是不正確的。請修復。台灣雖然沒有加入聯合國,但也是WHO和APEC的會員國,截至2010年10月止,擁有31個國際組織的官方會員,聯合國並不是唯一的判斷標準。--61.224.232.166 05:38, 21 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Historically, Taiwan claimed to be the real government of China, not independent of China. During the "green" period, some Taiwanese politicians flirted with changing this, but the government never issued any kind of formal definitive declaration. I'm sympathetic to Taiwan in some ways (such as the assholes in the WHO refusing to help with SARS in Taiwan because politics seems to be more important to them than preserving health), but if Taiwan has not declared itself to be an independent and separate nation, then it's really not up to us on Wikimedia Commons to take that step for Taiwan... AnonMoos (talk) 14:22, 21 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I here refers to the "Taiwan" is actually "Republic of China", the word "Taiwan" is the "Republic of China" at present the main appellation in the world. "Taiwan" although politically independent of communist China, but is not really a country strictly, otherwise wouldn't have the so-called "Taiwan independence movement". Historically, the Kuomintang government (during the "blue" period) in the past often claimed to be China, indeed the world is to "Free China" or "Nationalist China" to call it, but will not so see it as part of the "Communist China"(or the "Red China"). The "Republic of China" is indeed a sovereign independent country. "Taiwan" is the national flag is the flag "Republic of China", rather than the full red flag.
In addition, the above the 2014 speech, should be to the WTO, rather than the WHO, I accidentally got the wrong number, sorry.

--1.165.113.158 11:15, 5 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but unless something changes in the real world, Taiwan won't be shown with separate flag on this image. AnonMoos (talk) 18:21, 21 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Well, at least can be labeled gray in Taiwan?

好吧,那至少可以將台灣標示為灰色吧?--61.224.235.152 08:22, 3 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Taiwan is treated as an extension of the red flag of the PRC in this flag because that is how the UN treats it. As AnonMoos says, it is not up to Wikimedia Commons to discuss the evidence and arbitrate/declare for ourselves which countries are independent; we just reflect a list decided on the outside. We are well aware that the UN is not the only standard, but it is the one we have chosen for this graphic. A single consistent, unambiguous, external standard was needed to avoid headache-inducing disputes about whether Taiwan, Palestine, Northern Cyprus, Western Sahara, Somaliland, etc. should or should not be shown (e.g. "if you show X, then why not Y?", "If you avoid X, you must remove Y also", "X ought to be part of Y", and the like).
The grey colour is reserved for places designated by the UN as Non-Self-Governing Territories with no administrative authority, which does not apply to Taiwan. Regards, Transparent 6lue (talk) 22:25, 12 July 2015 (UTC).[reply]

Ok, I understand, thank you for your instructions (although very unwilling... you can imagine if New Zealand is designated as part of the United Kingdom or Australia what it feels like...)

好吧,我了解了,謝謝你的說明 (雖然很不甘心... 你可以想像如果紐西蘭被標示為英國或澳洲一部份是什麼感受...)--118.170.23.94 (Dynamic IP) 12:10, 15 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

File Rename: Flag-map of the world in UN.svg[edit]

Hello. Because the file describes the national flags in the UN excluding the non-UN nations (ex. Taiwan, Western Sahara, Kosovo, etc.), I consider that this file should be renamed to "Flag-map of the world in UN.svg". Afghanistan and Turkmenistan + Mauritania[edit]

Both the flags of Afghanistan and Turkmenistan are incorrect versions. The Afghanistani flag is an old version, and the Turkmenistani flag has an incorrect shade of green. These both need to be fixed.

Also, I myself have made an edit to the image, updating the flag of Mauritania. The changes made, however, may appear in the following days.--Sammimack (talk) 02:27, 17 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Palestine[edit]

@Transparent 6lue: Palestine is now an observer state at the UN so it should be shown here. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 12:22, 27 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This map shows UN members only, not observers. Transparent 6lue (talk) 22:34, 27 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Transparent 6lue: Alrightey then. Should it be shown in grey then since it's now an observer or be kept as-is? – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 05:25, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Regardless of Palestine's UN status, the map if Israel should not extend over the Occupied Palestinian Territories. They should be shown as grey, much as Western Sahara (for example) is. 104.246.222.65 19:50, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Mongolia[edit]

Could we please get the correct darker shade of blue into the triband of Mongolia? I'm using this SVG as the background for my CT head scan animation.

Antarctica[edit]

Could we please increase the height of Antarctica? We need to check the correct latitude. I've mapped this SVG onto both side-on and top-down globes, and Antarctica should be fatter. The Antarctic bight goes too deep. I've tweeted my animations @NITSOPOULOS_K, and I'd be happy to upload the spinning globes (GIF), and moving flag map. One way to get the shape right is to reverse map from a real satellite image onto a rectangle. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tinos (talk • contribs) 06:50, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
