The source for this work, which should be George Trumbull Ladd, Direct control of the retinal field, 1894, says: "The color of the 'Eigcnlidht' had (i.e., ordinarily on beginning the experiment) the appearance of a dancing mass of vari-colored dust, red predominating.", and it's probably not even relevant to the full field of view.
