Year?[edit]

Is the map really from 1879? The Brooklyn Bridge was built in 1883. --68.175.44.30 14:04, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The bridge was 13 years in building and the towers were in place in '79. It is reasonable to expect the painting to anticipate its completion and use. Jim.henderson (talk) 17:38, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Something's wrong with this image[edit]

When I load the image it gives me this error on Firefox: "The image “http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6d/Currier_%26_Ives_Brooklyn2.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors." When I try to open it with IE7 or Chrome, it loads only about 30% of it. Eugeniu B (talk) 23:14, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your system might have difficulty handling extremely large images. This is over 50MB. Durova (talk) 14:17, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It took 20 minutes to load with my slow DSL but MSIE 8 under Vista with 2 GBytes RAM had no trouble showing it. Delightful to see the island in the middle of Wallabout Bay, and the gasworks on the right bank of the Gowanus Canal. Surprizing to see the shore below Brooklyn Heights filled with commercial buildings, some of them named. Jim.henderson (talk) 17:38, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, I had no idea the file was that big. I guess it would be best for me to download it then open it with some other program. Eugeniu B (talk) 20:41, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Shortly after that restoration I started uploading compressed courtesy copies as alternates, for people who deal with slow connection speeds. If you'd like a hilarious sight and have the time, have a look at the unrestored file. The chromolithography was sloppy on the red ink, so there's an inadvertently grisly appearance to some of the churchyards and ship decks. Brooklyn must've been even tougher in the nineteenth century than it is now. ;) Durova (talk) 17:54, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Where can we find the compressed versions?Jim.henderson (talk) 15:54, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
