This map is wrong. It shows Zimbabwe as gaining independence in the 1960-70s. Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) did not gain Independences unit about 1982. The British/Commonwealth and UN (all members) refused to recognise its unilateral declaration, due to the issue of minority rule under Ian Smith.

Mexico[edit]

Wasn't Mexico after 1800? 67.86.28.14 19:55, 11 January 2011 (UTC)]][reply]

Ripe with historical inaccuracy[edit]

This is one of the worse maps on commons. It provides absolutely no sources for its claims. Some examples:

  • Russia : Listed as "1990s". I guess people don't know that there was a Tsardom of Russia since 1547?
  • Serbia : Listed as "1990s". The first serbian state was established in 768.
  • Montenegro : Listed as "1990s". Montenegro became independent from the Byzantine Empire in 854.
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina : Listed as "1990s". First mention of Bosnian state in 950.
  • Macedonia : Listed as "1800s". Unless 1992 is "1800-1899", I hardly think so.
  • Mexico : Listed as "1200-1799". Mexico became a nation in 1810.
  • Iran : Listed as "-1000BC". If you are seriously suggesting that the Median Empire is in any way related to Iran's nationhood, then you should also include the Egyptian civilization for Egypt , the Minoan civilization for Greece and so on.

Exactly what is the scope of this map? Is it to demonstrate when countries became independent (like it does with the former Communist block, Africa, South America) or when a sovereign country first achieved national consciousness? There is a big difference. Greeks have always had national consciousness since ancient times, but Greece only declared independence in 1822. --Philly boy92 (talk) 13:51, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Muscovy or Kiev goes further than that and the PRC doesn't make it past the 1920s for the generous. As mentioned on the wikipedia talk page, this thing has to go. LlywelynII (talk) 13:13, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A Ukrainian state did not exist before 1917, ukrainian nationalism not before the 1840s, however the Ukrainian hetmanate was found in the 1640s. A Russian state is much older than 1990s!!! Since 1547 non-stop existing is a quite good date. However, this is not the only problem, Egypt for example is much older than the 1920s. Nationhood and statehood (even it was british protectorate) is at least since 1811. Same problem with Morocco, although it was French protectorate it neither lost statehood nor nationhood since 13th century. Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and so many more mistakes... --Roxanna (talk) 16:30, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
