Sub-Categories[edit]
Countries which have adopted the Gregorian calendar.Countries which use a modified version of the Gregorian calendar.Countries which use other calendars alongside the Gregorian calendar.Countries which have not adopted the Gregorian calendar.
I think the current classification into four categories of adoption is a bit “undercomplex”.
In particular, the green category of “have adopted” does really mean “use the 12 irregular months and the 400-year leap cycle”. Countries differ in whether they also use the lunar part of the Gregorian calendar to determine some of their holidays (i.e. Easter and dependent ones):
- Some green countries observe no holidays depending on the Gregorian Computus or any other lunisolar algorithm.
- Some green countries do observe holidays depending on the Gregorian Computus.
- Some green countries observe holidays depending on a different lunisolar algorithm, e.g.:
- Dionysian/Bedan Computus within the Julian calendar (e.g. Russia, Serbia, Georgia) or the Revised Julian calendar (e.g. Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine)
- Chinese (Lunar) Calendar (e.g. China, Vietnam) or one of the Buddhist calendars (e.g. Myanmar, Nepal, Cambodia)
- Hebrew/Jewish calendar (Israel)
- Hijri/Muslim/Islamic calendars (e.g. Saudi Arabia)
Unsurprisingly, almost all orange and red countries are using one of these latter variants as their primary calendar. — Christoph Päper 21:50, 29 December 2023 (UTC)
