Original version[edit]

I reverted the edits made back to the original version. There were two sorts of edits made: horizon levelling and removing shaded patches in the sky. There are several problems with this.

Firstly the image has no horizon so it is hard to see how that can be levelled. All one can go on is to check that the verticals of any (truly) vertical line are actually vertical. One can see quickly that they slope all over the place, and this is due to vertical perspective -- the camera has been pointed up slightly. Now, we could correct that, but the photo was taken by a notable photographer who would be well aware of this issue. He wouldn't have access to software to correct the distortion but could have used a tilt-shift lens instead, if he had one suitable for the image. We can't know if he'd want it corrected (he's dead) and I think we should respect the artistic choices he made at the time. All photos on Commons belong to the image creator and their artistic creation should be respected.

The second edit seems to be more one of restoration, where some odd patches in the sky were "fixed". It is possible those are worthwhile edits, but they should be made on the original JPG (since editing a JPG repeatedly will degrade it) and should be saved at a high quality (low compression) setting. When these edits were done, the file size dropped considerably. If redone, care should be made to save the image at the highest quality setting, and preferably embed an sRGB profile while we are at it. -- Colin (talk) 08:18, 1 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Colin: I agree with your reasons for keeping the image on the original rotation. It looked funny, so I changed it, but I can see what you say about a respected photographer knowing what he was doing. So thank you for reverting it. However, I didn't make any changes to the sky; that was a different user, you'll see! (And I always save my images with 100% compression to slow the onset of JPEG artifacts) Anyway thanks for the comment! -- Thennicke (talk) 10:29, 1 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Colin: @Thennicke: I agree. I uploaded a restoration as a separate derivative [1]. (I didn't see the commons nomination earlier!) About rotation, agreed, this scan doesn't need it. About restoring from an original: On the uploaded derivative file I have now applied the changes to the original (first uploaded) copy and saved at the largest file size (my earlier upload was at 100% too with no compression, but I had not saved it at the largest file size). About embedding sRGB profile: I don't know how to add "ICC Profile: sRGB" to the EXIF data. Also I am not certain whether adding it will or will not affect the file's rendition in Photoshop or Mac browsers. I added it as a comment in the EXIF data. If you see any problems, please let me know. Bammesk (talk) 04:16, 2 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
