Image is wrong.

England and Wales are not a subset of Scotland.

"Ireland" should be "Republic of Ireland" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.107.0.73 (talk) 18:50, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Republic of Ireland is not, in fact, called the Republic of Ireland. Its official name is Ireland. As for England and Scotland being a subset of Scotland, of course they're not. That's not the intent of the diagram, but it is being interpreted that way, and will likely be changed in a future version. Lexicon (talk) 19:09, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Redid the diagram to include CI

[edit]

I redid the diagram because every other source includes the Channel Islands in the British Isles. For example:

  • The Oxford English Dictionary explicitly includes them.
  • Channel Island Govt. websites include them:
    • Jersey govt. website
    • the Guernsey one is less unequivical (except for Alderney) but a look at through Google shows that they clearly see themselves as being "within" the British Isles, as opposed to "outside" of the British Isles.
  • Google (web, scholar or books) prodive plenty of evidience that they are normally included
  • Encarta inclueds them
  • Even the Comlete Idiots Guide to Geography includes them!

The only place I can see where they are explicitly excluded in WP. For sure, there is the ambiguous definition of Great Britain, Ireland "and adjacent smaller islands" but this does not exclude the as they are "adjacent" (adjacent: next to or adjoining). Whether geographically closer to France or not, they are considered geographically a part of the British Isles virtually universally except on Wikipedia. --User:Sony-youthtalk 12:12, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Typo in diagram

[edit]

Guernsey is spelt incorrectly in the diagram as it stands. Could someone with the ability to edit SVG files please correct this? Loganberry (Talk) 00:56, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. --User:Sony-youthpléigh 19:16, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image not displaying inline in Firefox/Mozilla

[edit]

In Firefox 2.0.0.4 under Windows 2000 and XP, and Mozilla 1.7.12 in Linux, the image does not display inline (either on a page or on its image page). I see a white image on a page, and the transparency grid on the image page. On the image page, click the image so it opens directly in the window, and the image then displays. No idea what is going wrong here. Ghiraddje 22:27, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Argh! Same on Safari. This wasn't the case. I had this problem happened before when I uploaded a newer version. --User:Sony-youthpléigh 22:32, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WONDERFUL

[edit]

Great work everybody. (Now if someone can just do this with the dates Kings of England became Kings of Britain became Kings of the UK, all the history buffs will be happy too!) No, seriously, this is everything the 'pedia should be and more. jengod (talk) 03:43, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind! Someone did! Image::Nations_of_the_UK.png :) jengod (talk) 03:50, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Scotland

[edit]

Scotland isn't contained in Great Britain, but extends to the Hebrides, Orkneys and Shetland Islands (List of islands of Scotland). dab (𒁳) 15:04, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Euler diagram?

[edit]

Why is this an Euler diagram and not a Venn diagram? Thanks in advance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.92.222.166 (talk) 04:48, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A Venn diagram shows all logically possible combinations of sets, whilst an Euler diagram shows only those which actually exist. For example, a Venn diagram would need sections representing the overlap between Scotland and Jersey. This Euler diagram correctly omits such empty sections. Northern Ireland?

[edit]

Why is Northern Ireland under British Islands while the Republic of Ireland isn't? surely half a island cant be a British island.--Coin945 (talk) 08:24, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hear, hear. The diagram is flawed and inconsistent because the term is flawed and inconsistent. All of this back-and-forth is Wikipedia's way trying to make sense of and justify the partition of Ireland - an exercise in futility. The most useful thing about this diagram is that it clearly demonstrates that the only use of the term "British Isles" is to lump the Republic in with the UK and its bizarre constitutional arrangements with the Isle of Man and Channel Islands et cetera.
Enough already. The Empire is history and the term "British Isles" should be history too. Windyjarhead (talk) 04:40, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Northern Ireland should be within the United Kingdom but not British Islands. Adresia (talk) 11:21, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

According to British Islands and the UK Government [1], the term includes the whole of the UK (and other places). It's an encyclopaedic fact that NI is currently part of the UK, even if some people would prefer it not to be. Certes (talk) 14:22, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ireland

[edit]

The diagram shows two sections of Ireland which are part of neither (Republic of) Ireland nor Northern Ireland. Or, if those are part of Northern Ireland, than that means that there are two sections of Northern Ireland which are not part of the United Kingdom, which is not correct. Vanjagenije (talk) 09:15, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

True. Perhaps the diagram should be changed to remove these sections. We could also add the official[2] alternative (blue?) definition of Great Britain as England + Scotland + Wales including the isles of Wight, Skye, Anglesey, etc. Certes (talk) 01:36, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Channel Islands

[edit]

This should include Alderney and Sark also, as geographical entities but not political divisions. Adresia (talk) 11:25, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ireland...again

[edit]

Is it not time that the correct name for the Irish state was used? Just about all editors involved in British (or Irish) know what that is. Even the Queen made the following announcement earlier this year:

The Queen has been pleased to accept an invitation from the President of Ireland to pay a State Visit to Ireland this year. The Queen will be accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh.

There really is no excuse for spreading disinformation through an "encyclopedia". It's not good. Is there any appetite for correcting the diagram? 84.203.70.133 (talk) 08:38, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed revision to diagram

[edit]

I propose the following revisions to the diagram (rough draft is at right):

  • Add back "British Islands" (not to be confused with "British Isles")
  • Add "Crown Dependencies" to illustrate the fact that these islands are not part of UK
  • Add fill colors to help illustrate the groupings (visually, it seems to hold the circles together more than just the lines do)
  • Differentiate islands vs. archipelagoes, and sovereign nations vs. other political entities. This helps with understanding, in my opinion. The terms most familiar to people ("UK", "Ireland" [island], "Great Britain", "Ireland" [republic]) would be emphasized and clarified.

I'd also like to change "Republic of Ireland" back to "Ireland" because that is its correct name. I'd take input on how to best show the island/republic differentiation (perhaps the new fill/bold scheme would make the difference clear, anyway).
