Please, rename Capodistria into the current name: Koper. --Heretiq 14:16, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Capodistria is the name which is most familiar to english speakers: See en:Exonym. AnonMoos 21:40, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh really? Do you have a source for that statement? And why is then Umag not listed as Umago? By the way, this whole image and its caption is POV pushing, as it lists the disputed waters as "claimed by Slovenia", which implies that those waters are recognized as Croatian and Slovenia just demands them. In truth, the label "disputed waters" is a much more appropriate term (until the consensus is reached, either by arbitration or by court decision), and I kindly ask you to make the change accordingly. --Yerpo (talk) 12:02, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Calm down -- I created this map out of an interest in abstract geographical enclaves and exclaves, not to support any one side, or because I have personal connections with any one side (which I don't). Capodistria is an Exonym, and here I applied the "AnonMoos test" in deciding when to use an Exonym -- in my various readings on various subjects, I remembered the name "Capodistria", but didn't remember the name "Koper" or any of the other names of the towns (except Trieste, of course). And "claim" isn't a derogatory word -- claiming something doesn't imply that that thing must be true or must be false. However, Slovenia is the side which wants to most change the more or less status quo situation... AnonMoos (talk) 13:43, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So, this means you did original research which isn't permitted here. As for familiarity, "Koper" has 25 million+ hits on Google, compared to 339,000 for "Capodistria". Even english WP doesn't use the exonym.
Claim isn't derogatory on its own, but with the rest of the paragraph (I'm referring to the caption) it clearly implies that Slovenia demands something that rightfully belongs to Croatia. This is far from settled (or, as you referred, being status quo), and I don't see any reason not to change the wording to something more neutral. I obviously have a connection to one side, but I just want this picture to be neutral. Many people use Wikipedia and they could easily get the wrong impression. --Yerpo (talk) 16:41, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Original research (or at a minimum "original synthesis") is in fact permitted when creating graphics; you seem to be confusing Wikimedia Commons with Wikipedia... In any case, I don't know that I've placed too much reliance on Wikipedia's choice of endonyms vs. exonyms since the en:Free City of Kraków nonsense, when non-English speakers succeeded in imposing a name which is not what the entity in question is most often known by in English. AnonMoos (talk) 00:43, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Even so, why do you refuse to make a change when shown that you came to the wrong conclusion with your original research? If the huge difference in Google hits isn't enough to convince you, you can also check CIA world factbook's entry on Slovenia. It says Koper. --Yerpo (talk) 13:39, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

fallacy[edit]

There seem to be a few mistakes in this map and text below. 1. The area claimed by Slovenia comprises the whole bay of Piran (not just 2/3 of it), the corridor and the exclave on the map. What is seen here as claimed by Slovenia was actually agreed upon as belonging to Slovenia by the Drnovšek-Račan agreement in exchange for the exclave and a 1/3 of the Bay of Piran. 2. Slovenia has ratified the agreement while Croatia has signed but not ratified it. 3. The coastline of Slovenia is along the Bay of Triest in which lies also the Bay of Piran. 4. The name of Koper should really be changed to it's proper name instead of Capodistria. Quite an unnecessary provocation in my opinion but do as you wish.
