THE GRANDEST SCENE OF ALL. T was July 4th, 1893. The lake breezes in the earlymorning floated over the White City. Flags filledthe air ; eight hundred acres of flags ? Yes, more:in fact, Chicago was a sky of flags; and so was theState of Illinois. Hundreds of thousands of people were pouring,like a multitude of tides, toward the scene of enchantment. Theavenues of the Exposition were thronged early in the day, and thecrowds grew. The Lake was here white with craft and there shadowedwith steamers. There was music everywhere. The flags of all nations mingled; the national airs of all nationsmingled; people of all nations mingled. The White City was thefestival of the World. 172 ZIGZAG JOURNEYS IN THE WHITE CITY.

ADMINISTRATION BUILDING. Guns boomed, the wonder grew, and high noon was a scene ofglory. Our trio were early on the grounds. What is wanting here ? asked Mr. Marlowe, as they stood infront of the Administration Building, and looked down the Court ofHonor toward the Peristyle and Lake. Only a White-Bordered Flag, said Grandfather Marlowe, lookingup to the allegorical figures of the elements controlled and uncon-trolled,— only a Peace Flag to lead the future, and stand for thebrotherhood of all mankind.
