Title |
English: Young woman listening to a radio on the yacht "Muriel," circa 1923 |

Description |
English: This fashionably dressed young woman gazes out over what is probably Seattle's Portage Bay as she listens to a radio. Radios were still quite new in the 1920s. They had two parts: a receiver which picked up the signal, and a large, trumpet-shaped speaker which made the signal loud enough to hear. The receiver was large because it operated with tubes rather than transistors. The photograph may have been taken aboard the yacht "Muriel" which belonged to F. Creigh Nelson, son of the founder of the department store Fredrick & Nelson. Around 1923, the yacht was moored at the Seattle Yacht Club.
