The note on the front appears to read: "Cartref" [see comment below] Cowper Road Hanwell. I picked this up from a little antiques fair in Lymington, Hampshire, yet the address is just 500 meters from where I live. I have had a look at the 1911 census and whilst there are named houses on this road none seem to be even a rough match for the name here. But also, from what I can see there are a large number of house numbers missing from the sequence, which is strange. I wonder if they were unoccupied? The houses, like my own, were probably built in the first decade of the 20th century. So I then turned to Google Street View and amazingly I think I've nailed it to what is now 80 Cowper Road. The reason that I can be so sure is that there appears to be just one row with architectural details that match, and this one looks to be the one at the end of the short terrace, to the left (though sadly those very details are now practically obliterated by the rendering). See maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=80+cowper+road&hl=en&ll=... The reverse has the handwritten message: "Dear Pollie Our kindest wishes for a very happy Christmas and a bright & prosperous New Year. Maggie". It's a standard real photo postcard back, unposted, with no indication of photographer. So, was this house not occupied by the time of the 1911 census? Is there any other way of confirming the locations, or indeed finding out who Maggie was? And was she the girl, or the girl's mother? |
