Description |
English: For centuries, the Makah people have built cedar canoes for whale hunting and long distance travel. In this 1914 Curtis & Miller photo, Young Doctor, a member of the Makah Tribe, uses his adze to shape the bottom of a new canoe. After he finishes this work, he will turn the canoe over and hollow it out. The canoe will be steamed into its final shape, given thwarts and gunwales, and painted. Original photograph: Curtis & Miller, July 27, 1914. Copied after 1975 by the Museum of History and Industry.
