Many things determine its charac-ter and contents — our tastes, the money at our disposal, ourprevious education, our leisure time, and the age and disposi-tions of the persons who are to use it. One must choose hisbooks as he does his friends, because he is in sympathy withthem, their subjects, and the methods of their treatment. Itis as easy to quarrel with books as with living people, and aseasy to find in them loving companionship and genuine friends. A library can not be made to order all at once, no matterhow much money we can afford to spend upon it. It mustgrow and take shape with the experience of its owner. Onemust become acquainted with books as with persons. A col-lection of strange volumes is as unsocial as a crowd of peoplewhom we have never before met. These place at our commandthe most important of all truths, information upon the multi-tude of subjects that in various ways are brought to our atten-tion, with a key to the meaning of all the words of our mothertongue. Next comes an authoritative statement of the Chris-tian doctrines we profess to believe, and a clear and standarddefense of them. Then the history of our own people andcountry, affording that knowledge which is the foundation ofpatriotism, and indispensable to the duties of citizenship. Addto these a good newspaper giving current events, and a goodmagazine containing the current thought of the times, and youhave the framework of a library.
