Summary[edit]

Description

While the dunes are the centerpiece of the park and preserve, there are many other ecosystems including alpine tundra. Marmots thrive in this extreme environment by eating as much as possible during the short summer season, then hibernating through extreme winter conditions. Medano Lake Trail and Sand Creek Lakes Trail lead hikers to alpine tundra.
