Description
English: Heraldic window in Churston Ferrers Church, Devon. The window was commissioned in 1864 by John Yarde-Buller, 1st Baron Churston (1799–1871), lord of the manor, and comprises 19th century modern glass with 16th century fragments taken from elsewhere in the church, (Tregaskes, Jean, Churston Story: 1088-1998, p.16) most notably 16th century arms of the Yarde family, lords of the manor of Churston Ferrers. Arms of Yarde: Argent, a chevron gules between three water bougets sable. The arms of Yarde are shown impaling Wadham, Halse, and Bampfield, denoting the marriages of three generations of the Yarde family in the 15th and early 16th centuries. The top two outermost roundels are modern 19th century shields displaying arms of Buller, which family inherited Churston-Ferrers by marriage to the Yarde heiress. The top-most shield displays Gilbert (Argent, on a chevron gules three roses of the field) impaling Champernowne (Gules, a saltire vair between twelve billets or), for the marriage of Otes Gilbert (1513-1547) of Greenway in the parish of Churston Ferrers, to Katherine Champernowne, 4th daughter of Sir Philip Champernowne oif Modbury, Devon.
