Summary[edit]

Description

Originally a long stairway, Yüksek Kaldırım Street starts at the intersection of Karaköy and Bankalar Streets and ends in Galata, also giving its name to the surrounding neighborhood. The Genoese, who formed this area of the city, preferred to structure routes descending to port areas (to water or the sea) as stairwells. In 1956 the steps of Yüksek Kaldırım were levelled into a slope so that it could be used by vehicles.
