Description

Xerula pudens (Pers.) Singer

Image location: Landgoed Soelen, Zoelen, Gelderland, Netherlands

Description of MHCB-16102903:

Pileus: 27 × 7 mm; plano-convex with decurved margin and low umbo; entirely velutinose, margin fimbriate; tad rugulose around the centre; brown, darker in centre, reddish hairs on outmost margin; margin exceeds lamellae.

Lamellae: L: 33, l: 1-3; barely touching the stipe, subdistand,; white; cystidia visible with 60x magn.

Stipe: 11 × 4-5 mm; central, compressed at apex, cilindrical otherwise; radicating; longitudinally striate, almost costate near root; entirely hispid with shourt hairs that are brown, but gradually become more red towards apex; reddish brown surface, more of a copper red at apex.

Context: Tough, quite flexible in both stipe and pileus, fairly distinct grooved in apex; firm and solid; white throughout.

Smell/Taste: None to very faint spicy smell; mild, slightly “dark” flavour.

Microscopy: None done

Ecology: Associated with Quercus on mesotrophic, loamy soil, old lane.

Notes: Dessicates very well, keeping most of its stature and colours. Beautiful mushroom!

Recognized by sight: Small, hairy, beautifully coloured Xerula.
