Xanthoparmelia mexicana (Gyelnik) Hale Image location: Santa Barbara Co., California, USA Abundant on sandstone boulders in open sunny aspects with surrounding coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia). Light yellow green thallus abundant on roadside boulder. No apothecia or soredia, isidia abundant. Thallus light tan below, no rhizines near lobe tips. Medulla white, K+Y turning dark red. Co-occurs with Xanthoparmelia lineola. Xanthoparmelia plittii and other species that are isidiate with light lower thallus color, large overall size and K+ positive reaction differ from Xanthoparmelia mexicanaby medulla chemistry, with X. plittii and others having a K+Y turning orange (Norstictic or Stictic acids) rather than red (Salazinic acid).
