Der verachtete Neffe Friedridrich Wilhelm war der Sohn von Prinz August Wilhelm (gest. 1758), dem jüngeren Bruder Fridrichs II. Er war zwei Mal verheiratet, führte zwei morganatische Nebenehen und eine langjährige außereheliche Liebesbeziehung zu Wilhelmine Enke, seit 1796 Gräfin von Eichtenau. Aus diesen Verbindungen gingen insgesamt 15 Kinder hervor. Hochgewachsen, hoch gebildet, von gewinnendem Wesen, sensibel, kunstsinnig, ein virtuoser Cellospieler - so beschreiben ihn Zeitgenossen. Friedrich II. verachtete seinen Neffen. Als Kronprinz hatte er in Potsdam unter strenger Aufsicht seines militärischen Erziehers zu exerzieren, doch nicht ein einziges Mal wurde er an die Tafel seines königlichen Onkels nach Sanssouci geladen. An Stelle eines Philosophenschlosses Rheinsberg erhielt der Thronfolger nur das umgebaute Eckhaus am Neuen Markt in Potsdam als Kronprinzenresidenz zugewiesen, das später sogenannte Kabinetthaus. Der lebens- und liebesfrohe König ließ das I lolleben und das kulturelle Leben in Berlin wieder aufblühen. Davon zeugt bis heute das von Carl Gotthard Langhans nach dem Vorbild der attischen Propyläen errichtete Brandenburger Tor, das den Berlinern den Tiergarten eröffnete. Auch der Wiederaufbau der 1787 durch ein Großfeuer weitgehend zerstörten Stadt Neuruppin zu einer einzigartigen klassizistischen Stadtanlage ist Friedrich Wilhelm II. zu danken. Am erfolglosen Koalitionskrieg gegen das revolutionäre Frankreich musste sich Preußen beteiligen, auch wenn er die Finanzkraft des Staates überbeanspruchte. Dafür gewann er im Osten ohne einen Schuss durch die zweite und dritte Polnische Teilung 1793 und 1795 für Preußen 104.000 km2 Land hinzu, 4 von 10 der jetzt 8,69 Millionen Preußen sprachen nun polnisch. Der Vergrößerung des Landes um die Hälfte standen beim Tod Friedrich Wilhelms II. 48 Millionen Taler Staatsschulden gegenüber. |
