—Cleveland Plain Dealer CHAPTER II STORY OF THE TITANIC The Unsinkable Titanic Strikes an Iceberg AND Sinks—Hundreds Carried to Sudden and Untimely Death for Lack or Adequate Lifesaving Service—The Facts of the Wreck. The mighty ship Titanic, the triumph of the shipbuilders, thronged with happy, confident people, interested in her first voyage and her speed record, ploughed her swift way across the Atlantic, which lay smooth and calm and clear. In the midst of pleasant amusements and happy dreams there came a slight shock, a glancing blow from an iceberg, a few minutes of calm disbehef—then horror incredible. The Titan of nature and the Titanic of mechanical construction had met in mid-ocean. The iceberg ripped open the ships side, exposing her boilers to the icy water, causing their explosion, plunging hundreds of people to their death within the short space of two hours. This is the tragic story of the beautiful ocean palace that sailed forth so gallantly from harbor on her maiden
