Zone : Centre de commerce Mondial de Montréal Description de l'œuvre : Cette présentation de Skawennati consiste en des films appelés machinimas, des images d’avatars et une collection de vêtements développés dans un environnement numérique et des motifs calicots. Interpellée par le caractère passéiste des représentations d’autochtones, ainsi que par leur quasi-absence de récits futuristes, Skawennati imagine des avatars cyberpunk s’immisçant dans l’actualité et revendiquant un avenir pour leurs communautés. Autour d’une ré-interprétation de motifs de camouflage, que portent beaucoup d’autochtones vivant dans des réserves, ou lors de manifestations, et de motifs calicots des chemises à rubans appréciées comme regalia, l’artiste occupe littéralement la galerie marchande du Centre de commerce mondial. Porteurs d’identité, ces motifs rappellent l’ensemble des revendications des communautés autochtones. La présentation d’une collection de vêtements signés Skawennati sert aussi de contre-poids aux vêtements vendus dans les commerces de mode à proximité. Elle rompt avec les représentations parfois nostalgiques or folkloriques des autochtones pour les situer de plain-pied dans l’actualité en tant qu’agents de tendances et de mouvances contemporaines. Par cette présentation protéiforme, Skawennati crée un art abordant l’histoire et inventant l’avenir de ces communautés. Commissaire : Marie Perrault Biographie – Skawennati: Née dans le territoire mohawk de Kahnawà:ke, Skawennati appartient au clan des tortues. Son travail a été largement présenté au Canada et à l’étranger et fait partie de collections publiques et privées. Elle co-dirige avec Jason Edward Lewis le AbTeC (Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace), un réseau de recherche-création d’artistes et d’universitaires qui explorent et créent des environnements visuels autochtones. En 2015, elle a aussi lancé avec Lewis l’Initiative for Indigenous Futures (IIF) vouée au développement de représentations futuristes des peuples autochtones. Skawennati vit et travaille à Montréal.
