Variety Stores in the 400 block of Lackawanna Ave., Scranton, Pennsylvania: 1) F. W. Woolworth Co's Scranton, PA store was the second but most successful store of the Woolworth Brothers. It was opened by C. S. "Sum" Woolworth. Sum developed the Woolworth front end of the business, while his brother Frank developed the back end concepts, revolutionizing the retail industry for the world. Many chains still employ their practices; 2) S. S. Kresge Co, which had partnered with John G. McCrory. Later Kresge bought out McCrory's share. Kresge eventually evolved to become K Mart Corporation and then Kmart Holdings Corporation. In 2004 Kmart bought out Sears Roebuck and Company, and took the name Sears Holding Corporation.
