Summary[edit]

Description
English: This pristine scene at Mirror Lake in Yosemite Valley dates from the 1860s. Photographer Carleton Watkins' images are credited with encouraging members of Congress to pass legislation that required California to protect the area from development. Subsequent efforts by landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted and naturalist John Muir resulted in Yosemite becoming a national park in 1890.

Watkins created https://www.loc.gov/pictures/search/?q=carleton+watkins+yosemite&fa=displayed:anywhere&sp=1&st=gallery&loclr=flik, which you can visit online at the Library of Congress.
