es above Windsor, in diggingout the chalk or soft stone there, of which the bulkof the wall consists; but it is faced with betterstone, a large proportion of it having been broughtfrom Wheatley in Oxfordshire, and a smaller partfrom Caen. Some of this was bought in London bythe Dean of St. Pauls, who had prepared it for someother purpose, but as that was not enough, threeships loads were brought direct from Caen. Thetimber must have been used quite green, as thecarpenters were sent out to cut it in the forest.Messengers were despatched to every part of Eng-land to impress the most skilful workmen. For ashort time as many as 600 men were employed inthe Castle, and 122 in the quarry in addition. Butthe number was soon reduced rapidly, the chroniclerssay, on account of the wars, and the consequentwant of money, but more probably because, whenthe materials were all prepared, only a small numberof hands were required, or could work at the sametime. Thetable was placed in a wooden gallery within thetower wall, with a passage under it for the servants,and an open space in the centre. The building wascovered by a roof of tiles; part of the wooden arcadeof the gallery remains, and nearly the whole of thecornice of the roof with the fine mouldings of thefourteenth century. There are entries in the accountsfor the purchase of tiles for covering the wall of thebuilding over the Round Table, and the carting ofthem from Penn in Buckinghamshire, where theywere made. The kitchen for the table was on thetop of the square tower on the slope of the mound,called the Kitchen Tower, which also served for thetower of a drawbridge over the moat. . . .
