H. Yorke'(lower right) and inscribed '"Esther Roy." of Maitland. H. McDougall. Master. off Holyhead 12 May 1898 oil on canvas 24 x 36 in. (60.9 x 90.9 cm.) The Esther Roy was built by A. Roy at Maitland, Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1877. Designed as a full-rigged ship, she was registered at 1,569 tons gross (1,534 net) and measured 219 feet in length with a 41 foot beam. Owned and operated by her builder for twenty years, she was sold to Italian owners in 1897 and thereafter sailed out of Genoa until reportedly abandoned at sea in a sinking condition in August 1899. |
