Located in the northeastern Aegean Sea, it is a famous touristic hotspot, receiving tens of thousands of visitors from all around the world every year. Fanned by strong winds, the blaze spread rapidly, burning pine forests, scrub and cultivated fields. The flames got dangerously close to the towns of Vatera and Vrisa, causing the evacuation of 450 people.
