Description:German soldiers supporting an injured Canadian near Arras, in France, during World War I. The photographs among the Haig papers capture many aspects and consequences of World War I, from the triumphal to the horrific. This photograph offers a rare image of compassion, showing an injured Canadian soldier supported by the shoulders of two German soldiers. The destroyed vehicles and burnt trees framing the trio of men are, in contrast, a sharp reminder of war's destructiveness. The jesting tone of this caption suggests that it was written by a British person. Friendly rivalry inevitably existed among the Allied armies, but there is no doubt that Canadian troops contributed hugely to the eventual Allied victory, especially in the final months of the war. The advance on Arras mentioned here probably refers to the offensive of August 1918 rather than the infamous battle of April 1917. [Original reads: 'Who said that the Canadian Service Corps have "Cushy Jobs"? Three transport wagons put out of action during the advance on the Arras front. Germans helping in a wounded Canadian.']
