his pupils, Lancret and Pa-ter and his followers, Boucher and Fra-gonard. There was a very serious under-current in French literature and life atthis time, but one does not perceive it in apifture by one of these masters. The re-sults of the artists investigations in thesecontemporary chronicles are surprisinglyfresh,fullof vigour,and far removed frommere tedious copies. In these gracefuldrawings the artist displays much of thesame decorative feeling that is a char-acteristic of almost all French art, andwhich in this particular group was alwaysthe paramount feature. Shinns studies in red chalk of the nude c 63: and of lightly draped figures are bril-liantly executed, and in their powers ofsuggestion display draughtsmanship ofa high order.
