ve. Othersdisplay an intelligent study of the platesof Rembrandt and Diirer. He has alsoproduced some extremely beautiful litho-graphs, that of Miss Maude Adams, asJuliet, being particularly delightful, whilethe Nude shown at this exhibition wascomparable to one of Charles Shannonsstones, so graceful it was, so vaporousand full of suggestion. Arthur Symons once said: Taste inWhistler was carried to the point of gen-ius, and became creative. This is alsotrue of Haskell, for he takes as much painsin placing his name or signature deviceupon a design as did Whistler, and always, like Whistlers butterfly, it is a neces-sary part of the composition. His frames, usually made of natural wood, are inva-riably severely simple, while the mats,of exa6lly the correft proportions, often C 18 )have been decorated by the artist, andsometimes have on them a border ofbrown lines and gold stripes, with w^ater-coloLir wash—as decorative prints wereframed in France in the eighteenth cen-tury. ^1 ^^ ^ l/^-

ERNEST HASKELL T/ie Fale TWO EXHIBITIONS OFTHE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY TWO EXHIBITIONS OFTHE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY A SET OF NOTESI THE annual exhibition of the Inter-national Society of Sculptors, Paint-ers and Gravers, held in London duringthe spring of 1911, was one of great in-terest. It contained many more paintingsof vital importance than were shown at theRoyal Academy—the latter being aboutas inspiring as the Paris Salon/ Foundedin 1898, Whistler was the first presidentof the International Society, which officehe held until his death, when he was suc-ceeded by Rodin. Among the membersare artists of such real genius as William l!he cleverest works are always to he seen at theSalon des Humoristes; these amiable drawings willlong outlive the blatant Salon figures. c 22:
