Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A political banner painted by Terrence J. Kennedy. According to the Fenimore Art Museum, it was most likely publicly displayed during parades or other political gatherings of the Whig Party in the Antebellum United States. The painting depicts at its center a bald eagle facing to the audience's right. The eagle is perched on a nearly leafless tree, its wings spread, the rooted on a cliff with an overcast sky in the background. On the cliff face, below the eagle and tree, is a shield with a blue strip and two rows of white stars at the top and vertical red-and-white stripes going down, with a ribbon hanging from the bottom. To the left of the eagle and cliff is are a green field with a cow and sheep and behind the field a sea with a clipper ship and a steamship. To the right of the cliff is a canal, identified by the Fenimore Art Museum as representing the Erie Canal. A train on rails also emerges from a tunnel in the cliff face. At the bottom of the image, tools are laid out.
