Summary[edit]

Description

Wenvoe Tunnel - built as part of the Barry Railway in the late 19th Century lies beneath Culverhouse Cross on the western outskirts of Cardiff. I've wanted to try and find the northern entrance to the tunnel for quite a while, and with the the weather having been dry (mostly!) for several weeks, this weekend seemed a good time to try, as I figured the ground might be reasonably firm. The entrance is just to the north of Culverhouse Cross Retail Park, and we found it very quickly, the only slight difficulty being the very steep climb down the cutting on to the trackbed. The trackbed at the entrance to the tunnel is heavily waterlogged, and presumably we saw it at its driest - Wikipedia suggests there can be up to four feet of water. Mud here at times - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wenvoe_Tunnel . The tunnel - which is just over a mile long is 'arrow' straight, and in this picture you can just make out the light from the southern portal. Mid way along the tunnel there is a ventilation shaft. This is located immediately behind the PC World store in the Cullverhouse Retail Park - see www.flickr.com/photos/126337928@N05/23952788389/in/photol... for a photo.

The tunnel was featured as part of the 'Hidden Cardiff' programme on BBC One Wales with Will Millard (available to watch for a limited period at www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08t3qcj
