The city of Sitka was originally founded by the Tlingit Indians in the area. The first settlement by outsiders was made around 1800 by Russia. After Alaska was purchased in 1867 by the United States, it became a U.S. settlement. The village pictured here was likely a Tlingit village, as they were the original settlers of the area.
