| Description |
A fishing boat on Lake Turkana, northern Kenya, the longest desert lake in the world which is famous for its crocodile population. Fish from the lake provide a valuable food and income source in times of drought, but the lake is a salt-water one, so the water cannot be used for drinking. The lack of rain this year across the Horn of Africa has resulted in failed crops, lack of water and death of livestock. The Government of Kenya declared the drought a national disaster as 3.5 million people in the country are in need of emergency assistance. Aid from the UK, in the form of a long-term 'hunger safety net' programme is encouraging fishing from Lake Turkana as a source of alternative food and income, to mitigate the effects of food shortages caused by the drought.
