Description

Three of Washington's most famous museums, on the north side of the Mall. Museum of History and Technology was opened in 1964. It was later renamed National Museum of American History. The National Museum of Natural History was openin 1910. Both museums are part of the Smithsonian Institution. The view is looking ENE from the Washington Monument.

The National Gallery of Art was established in 1937 and opened in 1941. It is often called the Mellon Gallery, after Andrew W. Mellon. He donated his large collection of old masters and $10 million for the building. The National Gallery of Art is not part of the Smithsonian Institution.

Constitution Avenue separates the museums from the buildings in the "Federal Triangle." These buildings were built and the early and mid 1930s. The Senate Office Buildings are in the distance on Constitution Avenue. Union Station is barely visible, below the source of the pillar of smoke and just to its left.
