Description

Looking ENE from the Washington Monument over Washington. The closer buildings include the Treasury Building, Willard Hotel, and Department of Commerce (Herbert C. Hoover Building. I worked for American Petroleum Institute in an office building in the center of the photo, at 1220 L Street, NW. (All "downtown" addresses in Washington are in the northwest quarter.)

The Willard Hotel, Washington's most famous hotel, closed in 1968. The white building in the center foreground had been opened in 1901. It was rebuilt and opened in 1986, with new section including offices in the space between the "old" hotel and Hotel Washington, which is on the corner of 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. This photo is geotagged with the location of the Willard Hotel.
