| Description |
English: The Warren Municipal Building, 318 West 3rd Avenue (corner Hickory Street), Warren, Pennsylvania, as seen in September 2021. Built in 1937 as a project of the federal Public Works Administration, this is a fine example of the Colonial Revival architecture that caught a second wind of popularity during the Depression as a favored style for the institutional buildings that were mushrooming by the dozens as publicly-funded make-work projects for unemployed construction personnel. The symmetrical façade, exquisite Classical detailing (including here a full tetrastyle Corinthian temple front with garland relief on the pediment, cut limestone flat arches with keystones above the bottom-floor windows and matching quoins on the sides of the façade, and a handsome central cupola topped with a weathervane and flanked near its base by a quartet of urns) all exemplify the style at a high level. The Warren Municipal Building is a contributing property to the Warren Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. |
