Deutsch: Wie im Kreiswappen handelt es sich bei dem Löwen wahrscheinlich um den landesherrlichen lüneburgischen, hier zur Unterscheidung in vertauschten Farben. Das Horn ist hier wie dort eine Anspielung auf den Ortsnamen.
Die Motive Löwe und Horn reichen weit zurück. Seit dem Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts, seit welcher Zeit Gifhorn als Stadt oder Wigbold bezeichnet wird, sind sie in den städtischen Siegeln zu finden. Die Einzelheiten der Darstellung wechselten, wie bei so alten Wappen üblich, im Laufe der Jahrhunderte, doch blieben die Grundmotive stets gleich. Die Farben des Wappens sind seit dem 18. Jahrhundert bekannt.

Die Flagge der Stadt zeigt in zwei gleich breiten Längsstreifen von Links nach recht die Farben blau und rot und im Mittelfeld das Stadtwappen.“[1]
English: Gifhorn received town and market rights in 1275 from Johann, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg. Since the late 14th century the city used its own seals. All seals show the lion of the Welfen dynasty, to which the Dukes of Brunswick belonged, as well as a canting horn. The colours are known since the 18th century and have not changed since.
