Description
English: Taken at the Tennessee State Fair in either 1917 or 1918. Published with caption:

"Davidson County's 'Oldest and Youngest Knitters,' of Nashville Chapter [of American Red Cross]

They are: Mrs. Powell and Miss Geneva Jones."

Accompanying text reads: "Knitting by the Nashville Chapter, A. R. C., began when a cablegram from Major Grayson Murphy, Chief of the Red Cross War Council, in France, of the American Red Cross, was received at National Headquarters, which read: 'Begin shipping at once one and a half million each of knitted mufflers, sweaters, socks and wristlets, ... I urge you on behalf of our soldiers and those of our Allies who suffer in the frozen trenches.'

"The response to this appeal was instantaneous in Nashville and Davidson County. Hundreds of women came daily to the Knitting Department of the Nashville Chapter, and were given the wool and the directions for the garments they desired to make."
