Zonnebloemen, 1889 Sunflowers

Driven by his desire to establish an artists' colony in Arles, Van Gogh invited his friend Gauguin to come and live with him. To decorate Gauguin's room, he painted a number of still lifees with sunflowers. Of these, five remain: three with a yellow background, and two with a blue background. His friend called them 'a good example of a style that is wholly Vincent's.'
